Originally founded in 1974 by Rainer and Dieter Buchmann, the brand became known for redefining coachbuilding—blending bold design with cutting-edge technology to create truly bespoke machines. Today, Beau Boeckmann is reviving bb Auto in California, carrying that legacy forward through a partnership with Galpin Motors. The result is a modern interpretation of the brand’s original vision: combining classic automotive DNA with advanced engineering to create highly personalized, high-performance vehicles.
At the center of this revival is the bb Auto Porsche 911 Targa Hybrid, a reimagined G-body 911 that fuses analog driving feel with modern hybrid performance. Power comes from a custom-built 4.0-liter flat-six engine developed by Ed Pink, paired with a Vonnen Shadow Drive hybrid system. Rather than replacing the engine, Shadow Drive acts as a seamless “power overlay,” adding up to 150 horsepower through an electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission. This motor functions like an electrified flywheel, delivering instant torque across the entire rev range while preserving the car’s mechanical character. The system is self-charging through regenerative braking and engine power, requires no plug-in, and enhances performance without altering the fundamental driving experience.
Inside and out, the vehicle is fully reengineered to match its performance. The interior blends bespoke materials with modern technology, including updated infotainment and climate systems, while the chassis, suspension, and braking systems are redesigned to handle the increased power. Each build is highly customizable, with only a limited number of vehicles available, allowing owners to create a one-of-a-kind expression of their vision.
